Effects of gender and menopausal status on serum apolipoprotein concentrations

Anagnostis Panagiotis , Stevenson John , Crook David , Johnston Desmond , Godsland Ian

Introduction: Inconsistent data exist as to whether menopause is associated with increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. However, few studies have evaluated differences in apolipoprotein metabolism according to menopausal status and gender. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of gender and menopause on serum apolipoprotein B (apoB), A-I (apoA-I) and A-II (apoA-II) concentrations.Methods/design: A cross-sectional analysis was underta...

Before the use of potent acid suppressing drugs and in particular proton pump inhibiters (PPI), most patients with gastrinoma presented with Zollinger–Ellison syndrome and diagnosis was problematic in only a few. Clarifying the natural history of human insulin receptoropathy

Johnston David , Bulger David , Harris Julie , Semple Robert

Background: Insulin resistance is the reduced responsiveness of the body to the glucose-lowering activity of insulin. It is usually associated with obesity, but in a minority of patients, this is not the case. Single gene mutations can often be found in such patients, some of which affect the insulin receptor (INSR). There is a spectrum of genetic insulin receptoropathies. These can be considered as two groups. One group comprises rare, severe, autosomal recessive disorders: D...

D'Arcy Robert , McCance David , Johnston Brian , Eatock Martin , Wallace Ian , Graham Una

We present a 66 year old man with a metastatic small bowel neuroendocrine tumour managed with resection of primary in 2011 and subsequent somatostatin analogue therapy. In 2018 disease progressed requiring right ureteric stenting due to extrinsic nodal compression. Three weeks later he presented with sweats, pyrexia and elevated inflammatory markers. Multiple blood and urinary cultures were clear. CT imaging, MRI spine and echocardiogram did not identify a source of sepsis. Ur...
